Driver crashes into a house in London, Ont.

A London woman said she was lucky to be alive after a pickup truck crashed into her front porch on Saturday morning, just meters from where she was sleeping.

“My head is two feet away and I am fortunate that my head is not among the bricks,” the homeowner, who requested anonymity, told CTV News London.

“It’s just scary, and I looked out the window and the whole balcony was missing,” she adds.

Shortly after 1:15 a.m., a black truck was driving south on Adelaide Avenue in Hamilton Road when the truck came out of a plume and then crashed into the side of the house on Adelaide Street.

“It looked like a big earthquake or something, and the house was shaking,” she says.

Several first responders arrived at the scene, and the truck driver was arrested by the London Police Service and charged with three offenses under the Criminal Code. He is accused of failing to stop after an accident, refusing to comply with the request and disrupting the operation of a vehicle.

The truck was removed around 5:30 am, and by Saturday morning construction officials from the City of London were on site to assess the damage.

“The damage is significant, mostly on the front porch,” says Peter Kokoros, the city’s chief builder.

He adds, “We need to support the porch because there are structural elements missing with respect to the roof over the porch. There is a lot of brick that needs to be removed, and then, we will work with the building owner to address any building code issues that need to be followed up.”

With the exception of the front porch and roof, Kokkoros says, there is no structural damage to the rest of the house. There is no need to evacuate, and the occupants can stay.

The homeowner was still in shambles and only slept less than an hour, and he was feeling lucky.

“I am grateful for life,” she says, “and life has meaning.”
