Earthquake warning app gives alerts before an earthquake hits the West Coast

Thousands of Californians were alerted ahead of Tuesday’s 5.1 earthquake in the Bay Area, thanks to the MyShake app.

Officials from the California Office of Emergency Management and the USGS said the app, developed by the Berkeley Seismology Laboratory, alerted 95,000 earthquake devices up to 18 seconds before the quake, advising users to “drop, cover and wait.”

Since Tuesday’s alert, subscriptions to the app have skyrocketed, with more than two million phones registered, according to the app’s data page.

Anyone can download the MyShake app, but the system is fully functional only in California, Oregon, and Washington. You should receive alerts regardless of whether your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode, but the app will only notify you if an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 or higher is detected.

Download the MyShake app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store If you have an Android phone, open the app, and it will ask if you want to let it track your location and send you important notifications and alerts.
