An earthquake has hit an area of ​​the United States that has been plagued by a mysterious “swarm” of earthquakes over the past year.

The city near Colombia was reportedly damaged by a series of earthquakes months ago.

In response, the University of South Carolina installed 86 new mini seismometers to find out why, WLTX reports.

“There have been earthquakes at Elgin since the beginning of the year and no one has had a good answer as to what is happening with them,” said Daniel Frost, associate professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

“Hopefully now, we have these seismometers right above where the swarm is occurring, and we’ll be able to better locate these earthquakes.”

Counter results will not be available until January.

According to the National Geological Survey, the shaking will be mild and no damage is expected.

The State Department for Emergency Management said few people would feel the shaking unless conditions were “favourable”.

The state generally experiences 10 to 20 earthquakes each year.

Only two to five of them tend to feel.

WLTX said more than 700 people said they felt the vibrations.
