How to help people affected by the Venezuela earthquake

Thousands of people were affected by the successive earthquakes that struck Venezuela.

On June 24, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s Caribbean coast. It was followed by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that led to the collapse of buildings and thousands of deaths and missing people.

By Wednesday, July 1, the death toll had risen to 2,295, according to Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. He pointed out that there were more than 11,000 wounded, and shelter was provided to more than 15,000 affected people.

NBC News also reported that an estimated 50,000 people were missing.

Rescue teams from around the world, including the United States, traveled to Venezuela to help search for survivors under collapsed buildings. The United Nations expressed concern about the displaced, as survivors need food, medicine and shelter.

Among those rescued from the rubble was a mother and her 18-day-old baby, providing a glimmer of hope. However, there is much work to be done amid the devastation. In the days that followed, many organizations expanded their assistance and raised funds to help those affected.

On June 30, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced a joint donation of $1 million to the Red Cross for Venezuela earthquake relief. Meanwhile, a Venezuelan restaurant owner in Pasadena, California, and volunteers also packed dozens of necessities from hygiene products to sleeping bags to send into the country, NBC 4 reports.

What organizations help earthquake victims?

TODAY.com has compiled a list of credible relief organizations accepting donations to help those affected by the Venezuelan earthquake.

Airlink works with aviation and logistics partners to help transport emergency supplies and workers to disaster zones around the world.

The global humanitarian organization is accepting cash donations to assist search and rescue and emergency medical teams, disaster assessment and management teams, and provide much-needed relief supplies, including medical supplies, medicine, water filters, food, shelter supplies and more.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross provides relief and support to people in crisis. The humanitarian organization is part of the Red Cross’s global response. The American Red Cross receives donations through media partners, including Telemundo.

According to the organization, it is supporting the Venezuelan Red Cross to provide critical relief across earthquake-affected communities. The Venezuelan Red Cross has set up a field hospital and two first aid stations in La Guaira, as well as providing emergency shelter, relief supplies, health and mental health services, and family reunification services.

Community Organized Relief Efforts (CORE)

The non-profit Community Organization Relief Effort (CORE) is accepting donations to help with relief efforts.

CORE’s emergency response team is on the ground in Venezuela, the organization said on its website. The organization has also mobilized more than 1,000 children who will be distributed to “the most affected communities near the epicenter,” as well as “transporting heavy debris removal machinery to areas where vital roads prevent emergency personnel from reaching those affected.”

Direct relief

International humanitarian aid organization Direct Relief is accepting donations to assist those affected by the earthquake and research efforts.

Direct Relief said it is working closely with healthcare partners in Venezuela and the region to ensure the best assistance, including medical supplies and response teams.

Global impact

Global Impact is a philanthropy consultant, facilitator, and non-profit partner that helps raise money for global causes and other organizations. Global Impact accepts donations.

Their website states that Global Impact Charity Alliance members help with “shelter, medical care, food, clean water, hygiene supplies, and early recovery assistance for families who have lost their homes.” They also coordinate volunteer thank-you campaigns for humanitarian workers in Venezuela.

International Committee of the Red Cross

The humanitarian aid organization, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is accepting donations.

In the days following the earthquakes, the International Committee of the Red Cross indicated that it supported the efforts with emergency assistance through water supplies, technical support, medical supplies, forensic supplies and more.

World Central Kitchen

World Central Kitchen (WCK) is known for providing meals to those in need after humanitarian, climate and societal crises. WCK accepts donations.

Since the earthquakes, tens of thousands of meals have been served, WCK reports. They have partnered with nearly 20 restaurants, food trucks and ice trucks to carry thousands of bags of ice that will “help families preserve food and stay cool amid power outages and extreme heat.”
