Meridian, Mississippi (WTOK) – Flu season is in full swing with COVID-19 still very active in both Mississippi and Alabama.
Health professionals in both states want to remind the public to do what they can to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated, washing their hands, and covering their coughs.
Dr. Keith Everett, chief medical officer of the Anderson Regional Health System, said flu season typically lasts through April, and hospitals are now seeing an increase in caseloads.
“We have the flu going on here, a mix of different age groups, perhaps a bit skewed toward older people, but we are definitely seeing an increase in flu. 15% get the flu each year,” says Dr. Everett.
Dr. Everett advises patients to contact their doctor for treatment if they have the flu.
“If you’re sick, you might have the flu, call your health care provider ahead of time to find out what to do, and don’t enter the emergency room or provider’s clinic without proper advance directives.” It’s important not to try, you could actually have the flu,” said Dr. Everett.
Dr. Wes Stubblefield, the district medical officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said the state saw a very active flu season earlier this year.
“We have seen flu epidemics in every region of Alabama and throughout Alabama. Young children have the highest incidence of flu-like illnesses. Ages 5 to 24. We haven’t seen numbers this high since 2009,” said Dr. Stubblefield.
The Alabama Department of Public Health advises the public not to take the flu lightly and to do what they can to prevent getting sick.
“We recommend that everyone who is eligible for a flu shot, including most people over the age of 6 months, get an age-appropriate flu vaccine. There are multiple vaccines available. Of course I’d recommend that as one number, and second, if people are sick, they’re encouraged to stay home and try not to infect others, regardless of the reason they’re sick. Chances are you will be tested for either COVID-19 or the flu, which will show similar symptoms for RSV in your child. Try to cough into your elbows, keep your hands clean, and decontaminate surfaces,” Dr. Stubblefield said.
