Colchester Hospital visited by UK Health Security Agency
Colchester Hospital bosses have been forced to close their emergency department in response to urgent “infection control issues.”
Patients arriving at the Turner Road scene were redirected to hospitals in Clacton and Ipswich, with guards guarding the doors.
The hospital department was closed from mid-afternoon yesterday to 7:00 am today as a major cleaning of the facility took place.
A spokeswoman for the NHS Foundation Trust of East Suffolk and North Essex said the department was closed for new patients during this period.
she said:
“This is due to infection control issues.
“We did the general cleaning that we do every day at the hospital.
“We have closed the center so that we can address this issue and care for the patients there.”
Witness Vincent Donaldson, 65, told The Gazette of a “very disturbing” scene in which people in medical trolleys littered the scene.
“No one was allowed in and everyone was either transferred to Ipswich or Clacton or told to make an appointment with their GP,” Donaldson said.
The Colchester resident, whose mother was admitted to the hospital hours earlier amidst health scare, added:
“My wife said it was like wrapping them up and packing them up and stacking them in the hall. There were people everywhere on trolleys.”
“It was pretty scary, especially when your mom has a dangerous ticker. She was a little scared of what was going on.”
One patient said she was told to go to the hospital by calling 911, but was refused.
