Germany’s BioNTech plans UK trial of mRNA cancer therapy
German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, which developed a pioneering Covid-19 vaccine, will use the same mRNA technology to test a cancer treatment in the UK, the company said on Friday.
BioNTech said in a statement that by the end of 2030, up to 10,000 people could receive immunotherapy tailored to individual tumors, either as an investigational or approved treatment.
The project is part of a new agreement with the UK government focused on “immuno-oncology, infectious disease vaccines and expanding BioNTech’s footprint in the UK,” the company said.
BioNTech will also open a new R&D center in Cambridge with around 70 staff and a regional headquarters in London.
