HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer
North Dakota (KXNET) — January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. This is her fourth most common cancer among women worldwide.

“Cervical cancer is a cancer that occurs in anyone who has the cervix, the lowest part of the uterus,” said Women’s Way Coordinator Kjersti Hintz.
More than 95% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV, but HPV infection does not always lead to cancer.
“It’s a cancer that grows very slowly, but it’s one that doesn’t have many, if any, symptoms. So it’s the cancer that we screen for early detection, because we don’t really have symptoms for this type of cancer.” said Hintz.
However, there are options that can help reduce your risk of getting cervical cancer.
“Here at Bismarck Public Health, we promote the HPV vaccine. That’s why the HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent HPV cancer. The HPV vaccine is highly recommended,” said Medical Services Coordinator Angle Seidel.
The vaccine is recommended for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 12, but children as young as 9 can also be vaccinated. Some adults can be vaccinated, but the sooner they are given, the better.
“Gardasil 9® is recent. Ages 9 to 45. Two series from 9 to 15. It just reduces various HPV risk factors,” says Jayme, a certified nurse-midwife. Burman said.
Cervical cancer screening is done by doing a Pap smear.
“We follow ASCCPA guidelines from age 21 to age 21 to age 30, usually every three years. If that’s normal, it’s five years,” Berman said.
In 2019, 19 cervical cancer cases were reported in North Dakota. But even though this number is expected to grow each year, health experts say there are ways to prevent this cancer in our state.
