2.6-magnitude earthquake hits central Kentucky, scaring residents | Eddie Zoo

Burgin, Kentucky. – On Thursday, at 3:05 a.m., waves of a magnitude 2.6 earthquake rocked central Kentucky and the surrounding areas. According to reports from the US Geological Survey, the epicenter was east of Burgen.

Although the quake was relatively small, its effects were felt in Danville, Nicholasville, Lexington, and Frankfurt – cities about 30 miles from the epicenter.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was strong. However, there were no reports of anyone being injured or of any damage. Unfortunately, this latest seismic event was just another thing during a crazy morning of weather across Kentucky. There were torrential rains, hail, and even tornado warnings across the Louisville area. This made the people in the towns near Burgen feel even more anxious.

A Danville resident who wished to remain anonymous told WKYT,

I heard a loud growling outside my window and thought something had gone off, so I got out of bed to check but when I looked outside everything seemed normal.”

As people detected earthquakes in central Kentucky, some experts released statements. They said the tremors may be related to other, larger earthquakes in America. These larger earthquakes occur along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. This region is located near Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee.

The New Madrid earthquake area has had larger earthquakes in the past because it lies close to two tectonic plates. These plates are always moving against each other, creating tension underground for hundreds of miles around the region. Over time, this tension can cause seismic activity, or an earthquake.

During an interview with CBS News, one seismologist said:

We cannot expect any major earthquakes related to this event [in Kentucky]; However, small tremors like this are not uncommon throughout the areas near the New Madrid seismological area.”

All things considered, seismologists have urged calm among residents who live near Burgen.
