Christianburg, Virginia (WDBJ) – The New River Health District and the New River Valley Community Health Center says the incidence of COVID-19 and influenza is declining.
“Handwashing, masks and everything else, flu vaccines, COVID vaccines are still very important,” said Dr. Megan Thomas of NRV’s Community Health Centre.
Southwestern Virginia was hit hard this fall by what she called a “triple pandemic” of influenza, COVID and RSV, she said.
“Our hospital is very full,” she said. “Fortunately, it appears to have peaked in early January, but is starting to taper off.”
“What goes up comes down, so in the early season of a respiratory virus, it usually peaks within a few weeks of the rise starting,” said Jason Dees, an epidemiologist at the New River Health District.
Even with these diseases dwindling, Dr. Thomas says we’re still not out of the woods.
“Hopefully things have calmed down a bit,” she said. “When the kids go on spring break, they go on trips. Then they all come back and they can get sick again. So there can be a lot more.”
Deese said flu strains could switch in the spring.
“We often see the transition from influenza A to influenza B in the spring, so even if you haven’t had a flu shot, it’s never too late to get one,” Deese said.
