San Gabriel’s 249-year-old historic mission destroyed by fire – NBC Los Angeles

An early morning fire caused severe damage on Saturday to the nearly 250-year-old San Gabriel Mission, a milestone in southern California history that contains artifacts dating back to the late eighteenth century.

No details were immediately available on the cause of the fire on the historic mission at 428 South Mission Drive in San Gabriel.

No injuries were reported.

“It is sad,” Captain Antonio Negretti, the media officer of the San Gabriel Fire Department, told the Los Angeles Times.

The fire was reported at about 4:30 am and firefighters arrived to find the flame inside the church building.

Negretti told The Times that the ceiling of the mission had completely disappeared. He said that the interior until the altar was completely destroyed.

The altar is the original, handcrafted in Mexico City and brought to the expedition in the 1890s. The interior is filled with items of historical importance, including sculpted statues that were brought to southern California from Spain in the 1890s.

The building floors, walls and vaulted ceiling are original.

“Friends, I was very upset when I learned that the historic St. Gabriel Mission Church in Los Angeles was seriously damaged by a fire early this morning,” Robert Robert, Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, said.

Bishop Jose Gomez was at the site of the devastating fire on Saturday morning. He tweeted photos of those affected, including one that showed damage inside the building.

“Pray for this land that you helped find,” said Bishop Gomez.

“During the fire, parts of the roof fell on the firefighters. They were evacuated and launched a defensive attack,” Negrett told The Times.

The fire was extinguished at around 6:50 am

“It is a tragic loss for our city. It is the identifier of our city. We are trying to cope with it,” he said.

Terry Huerta, a spokeswoman for the mission, said the church’s inner wall was rebuilt about a week ago and the seats were installed as part of a renovation process marking the foundation of 1771. She described it as a “little miracle” as firefighters prevented fire from reaching the altar.

The church was scheduled to reopen next weekend after a four-month closure due to the Corona virus pandemic.

The expedition was founded on September 8, 1771 and became a site of significant historical interest in Southern California. Built with stone, brick, and mortar, it is considered one of the best preserved missions in California.

Damaged in the earthquake of 1804, it had to remove its arches so that a new roof could be installed. Another earthquake destroyed the building in 1812, and the bell tower was destroyed. The 1987 Waiter Narrows earthquake caused damage, as did the Northridge earthquake in 1994.

The church was the fourth mission created by the Franciscan priest Junipro Serra, the Roman Catholic priest throughout California, for his criticism of his abuse of Native Americans. His statues have been mutilated in protest for years, and statues in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento were among those toppled during recent protests for social justice.

The San Gabriel expedition transported its bronze statue from Serra in front of the church to a site far from public opinion.
