American Indians raise over $300,000 for relief from Turkey and Syria

More than 50,000 people were killed after earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria on February 6.

Indian Americans from across the United States have raised over $300,000 for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

The fundraiser organized by several prominent Indian Americans led by Dr. Hemant Patel, former President of the American Association of Indian Physicians (AAPI), the community raised over US$230,000.

The funds raised over the weekend in New Jersey were attended by Turkish Ambassador to the United States Murat Merkan, along with Turkey’s Consul General in New York Reyhan Ozgur, as they deeply thanked the American Indian community for their generous support to people affected by the earthquake. their country.

“He (the ambassador and consul-general) paid tribute to what is being done and what the Indian community is doing for the Turkish people,” Patel, recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor, told PTI.

Sewa International Houston’s AmeriCorps recently organized a fundraiser to support earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey. People from various communities across Houston came together to donate hundreds of items, including food, clothing, winter coats, toiletries, outdoor supplies, tents, hand warmers, shoes, and baby items.

More than 200 boxes were moved to the warehouse, filling three pickup trucks, a trailer, an SUV and a large U-Haul truck.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville, NJ held a special prayer gathering this week for those affected by the humanitarian crisis. BAPS community members extended support to the people of Turkey through prayer and generously donated $25,000 through their humanitarian relief arm, BAPS Charities, to the Embrace Relief Foundation.
