VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Pope Francis has sent medicines to earthquake victims in Turkey, where two deadly earthquakes in February killed at least 50,000 people and left more than 200,000 buildings severely damaged or flattened.

Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, papal almoner, and Turkey’s embassy to the Holy See are coordinating the latest round of aid from the pope, DeCastrie said to the Charity Service in a March 28 statement.

It added that about 10,000 units of unidentified medicines would arrive by air in Turkey by March 28.

She added that immediately after the earthquake, which displaced nearly two million people in Turkey, the Charity Department sent canned food, diapers and other much-needed supplies.

It also sent about ten thousand thermal shirts in mid-February to distribute them between Turkey and Syria, which was also affected by the earthquakes. It added that three pallets of the medicine were shipped at the end of February.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 struck the region on February 6, killing more than 55,000 people.
