The US Geological Survey reports that a series of at least three earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.5 have rocked northern California near San Francisco.

The first 6-mile-depth earthquake struck less than a mile from Pacifica, which is located about 14 miles southwest of San Francisco, at 6:01 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28, according to the USGS.

The agency stated that earthquakes measuring 2.6 magnitude followed minutes later in the same area, as one struck at 6:03 am and the other at 6:04 am.

More than 2,100 people from as far away as Concord and Santa Cruz reported feeling the earthquake to the agency.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are often felt but rarely cause severe damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude are rarely felt by most people.

The rapid and sudden shaking of an earthquake can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches. It can occur anywhere, but it’s most common in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico and Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
