Difficult calls in front of earthquake-prone St. Gerrard monastery in Wellington

City councilor Iona Bennett says that some “difficult calls” may have to be made about the future of the earthquake-prone St. Girard monastery in Wellington.

The monastery and church buildings, which are located above the Oriental Bay listed on the Heritage List, require a $ 11 million upgrade to bring them up to construction standards.

However, the monastery has so far only raised $ 42,000, which has raised questions about how to save the building.

Although the council will look at ways to help, the monastery may need to consider abandoning some of its buildings on the site, said Bennett, who owns the council’s Heritage Resistance Bag.

“It is clear that the parish will have to make some difficult calls about what it does with the buildings.

“What worries me is that we are now reaching the contract where many deadlines will end for the strengthening of heritage buildings.

“All options should be on the table.”

The monastery and church buildings are rated at 25 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS), and their owners have until 2027 to reinforce them.

Anything less than 34 percent is considered susceptible to earthquakes.

Panett said that the special grant was one of the options that the council had to give it some support, but in the end the monastery might need to be curtailed.

She said that the church itself was not in danger.

“All owners of heritage buildings must answer this question about whether or not it is accessible to all.

“It is a very painful process [relinquishing heritage buildings]But the buildings must be safe. “

St Mary of the Angels in Wellington underwent a $ 9.3 million upgrade before it reopened in 2017.

Panett said the council was in discussions with the monastery owners about the future of the buildings.

The buildings are owned by the International Catholic Evangelization Program (IPCE).

The director of the IPCE Mission in New Zealand, Silvana Abella, was not available for comment.

St. Girard is not the only church in Wellington that has had to deal with the costs of earthquake promotion.

St. Mary’s Church reopened to the Catholic Church in Polcote St in 2017 after upgrading $ 9.3 million to fix 10 columns, nine gates, and a roof.

St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Willis St. also needs a major upgrade.

The building listed in the Heritage List needs to be in 1885, and it needs a $ 6.3 million upgrade.

It has so far raised $ 3.3 million through donations, grants, and a trust fund.

The City Council contributed $ 168,000 through the Built Heritage Incentive Fund, which consisted of $ 1 million annually but was reduced to $ 500,000.

A step to increase funding by $ 100,000 annually through the Council’s 2020-20 annual plan for the Council was canceled by Council members a few weeks ago.

Wesley Methodist Church on Taranaki Street also needs earthquake reinforcement, as its church and other buildings are below the building level.
