Türkiye sends a puppy to Mexico after the death of a military dog ​​to rescue earthquake victims

The Mexican military has welcomed a new search-and-rescue puppy, gifted by the Turkish government as a gesture of gratitude for the life-saving work being done by Mexican emergency teams following the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria in February.

The three-month-old German Shepherd will join Mexico’s famous canine unit, which specializes in locating survivors in a country prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Ankara said it hoped the puppy would continue the “legacy” of Proteo, one of the Mexican rescue dogs who died heroically while rescuing earthquake survivors in Turkey.

Nine-year-old Proteo, whose remains were returned to Mexico for a military funeral, rescued three people before succumbing to exhaustion after a long journey and grueling hours searching for survivors in frigid conditions.

Proteo also helped find the bodies of 29 earthquake victims.

Turkish Ambassador Ilhan Tug said during the ceremony in Mexico: “Proteo will always be a symbol of enduring friendship and solidarity between Mexico and Turkey.”

The black and beige pup was named Arkadas — meaning “friend” in Turkish — after an online vote.

The army said Arcadas would be trained by the same coach who took care of Proteo.

“I hope Proteo’s little brother, Arcadas, can serve this government,” Tough said.

The excited puppy barked as Mexico’s national anthem blared from the speakers.

“Thank you to my friends from Mexico who have welcomed me with such affection. I pledge to do my best to be an amazing search and rescue dog,” Mexico’s Ministry of Defense said in a tweet on behalf of Arcadas.
