The earthquake-hit Noto Peninsula Airport is getting a new Pokemon-themed branding

Wajima, Ishikawa Prev. A celebratory event was held at an airport named after the popular Japanese anime series Pocket Monster, or Pokemon, in Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture on Tuesday.

The city’s Noto Airport was awarded the title of “Noto Satoyama Airport Pokemon with You” on the same day.

More than 100 Pokémon characters have been painted on walls and other parts of the airport, and limited-edition merchandise and meals are available in stores and restaurants.

According to the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, the airport is the first in the world to have the word “Pokemon” as part of the name. He will retain the title until the end of September 2029.

The prefectural government promoted the title project in cooperation with a Tokyo-based foundation that engages in activities that contribute to society through Pokemon.

“Pokémon Airport is expected to help accelerate” the region’s recovery from the powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in the prefecture in January 2024, Ishikawa Governor Yukiyoshi Yamano said at the ceremony held at the airport terminal. “I will work to turn the excitement of the new title into strength to advance the reconstruction efforts,” he added.

A large airplane-shaped balloon carried by Pikachu, one of the main Pokemon characters, was suspended from the ceiling of the lobby on the second floor of the airport building. A painting of several Pokémon characters relaxing in the peninsula’s landscape is located in the first-floor arrivals lobby as encouragement for the reconstruction efforts.

“I was happy to see Pikachu,” said a 5-year-old boy from Takaoka City in neighboring Toyama Prefecture.

The airport, run by Ishikawa Prefecture, opened in 2003. It suffered damage from the 2024 earthquake, such as cracks in the airport runway.
