Europe’s precision strike capabilities increase by $50 billion as UK leads new initiative
Prime Minister Kiir Starmer will convene allies at a NATO summit in Ankara today as Europe doubles its long-range forces. Over $50 billion to be spent across 12 countries [£37bn] Develop deep precision strike capabilities to strengthen home security and deter adversaries over the next decade. The initiative is further evidence that the Allies are taking a step forward to ensure a stronger and more European NATO.
The UK will lead a European initiative to boost funding for Deep Precision Strike capabilities across Europe when NATO leaders meet in Ankara today.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to bring together around a dozen European partners at a summit today to launch a new initiative, which will see the coalition spend $50 billion. [£37bn] Over the next decade, we will develop Deep Precision Strike capabilities to enhance defense and deterrence across the alliance.
The European Allies’ investment in long-range precision weapons will provide NATO with the most advanced weapons available for future use. This means it will have the ability to hit targets over 300km away, and in some cases over 2000km away, with pinpoint accuracy.
This initiative will fundamentally improve NATO’s defense and deterrence capabilities and is further evidence that the Allies are stepping up to ensure a stronger, more European NATO.
The UK has already invested £3 billion in its defense investment plan to 2030, supporting the UK’s precision strike capabilities. The new initiative will enable European allies to rapidly advance NATO capabilities by sharing expertise and technological advancements and deepening industrial cooperation.
It will also place deep precision strike at the center of NATO’s defense agenda next year.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:
“I am determined to ensure the security of the UK and our allies and to do this we must step up to deliver a stronger, more European NATO.
“The UK is already working with our partners to develop exquisite capabilities that will give our forces the ability to defend and deter thousands of kilometers from the front line, but this UK-led initiative will allow us to strengthen our collaboration and bring our European allies together to ensure NATO remains safe and secure for years to come.
“We must continue to work together as allies to strengthen our security and develop future capabilities to protect domestic growth.”
The Ukrainian military has proven that the effective use of long-range systems can have a game-changing impact on the battlefield, giving troops the ability to weaken enemy forces far behind the front lines. Long-range attacks by Ukraine, such as attacks on key logistics hubs, have had a major impact on Russia’s ability to sustain its offensive.
The UK’s £3 billion investment in long-distance fires includes a UK program with Germany and Stratus’ tripartite projects with France and Italy.
Under the Trinity House agreement, the UK is currently collaborating with Germany on the Deep Precision Strike program to accelerate both stealth and hypersonic weapons with a range of over 2000km. Expected to enter service in the 2030s, the system will be one of the most advanced ever designed in the UK.
Initially focused on ground-launched capabilities, the program will also explore air and naval capabilities to provide additional long-range deterrence and operational flexibility. The UK plans to invest £770 million in joint capabilities over the next four years.
The UK is also working with France and Italy to design a next-generation successor to the combat-proven Storm Shadow missile.
The three-party project, called Stratus, is developing both stealth and high-velocity missile variants. This variant can destroy high-value targets, destroy enemy ships and suppress enemy air defenses. The UK plans to invest £1.4 billion in the project over the next four years.
Stratus projects are already sustaining more than 1,300 jobs at MBDA in Stevenage and Bolton, England.
The UK is also participating in the Precision Strike Missile program with the US and Australia, equipping British forces with hypersonic ballistic missiles capable of hitting targets up to 500km away.
These programs will provide the UK Armed Forces with a long-range strike capability that allows them to operate from land, sea and air to deter adversaries, defeat threats and strengthen UK and NATO security.
Secretary of Defense Dan Jarvis said:
“With billions of pounds of support, and working with our closest European allies, we are building the weapons of the future that can keep the UK and NATO safe for decades to come.
“Our new family of deep precision strike weapons provides our forces with the ability to strike targets hundreds of kilometers away with high precision, enabling us to strengthen NATO and deter our adversaries.
“Investing £298 billion in defense over the next four years will help strengthen our readiness and ensure our people have the kit and skills they need.”
At the summit the Prime Minister will also highlight the very real threat Russia poses to the UK and NATO. In the past two years, NATO has flown fighter jets more than 700 times to intercept Russian aircraft approaching coalition airspace, and Russian military activity around British waters has surged by 30%.
He will emphasize that we do not seek confrontation with Russia, but we must be prepared to defend all our allies.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said:
“Through deep precision strike capabilities, the UK and its allies will be able to deter any attacker and enhance mutual security by striking high-value military targets and the logistics engines that drive our forces.
“From Ankara, we are sending a clear message to President Putin: NATO is stronger, more European and ready to protect our people from the long-term threats posed by him and the Russian state.”
