DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The U.S. military attacked Iran early Wednesday after it said Tehran struck three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, part of a U.S. effort that also revoked the Islamic Republic’s ability to openly sell crude oil on the global market. Iran responded with strikes targeting Bahrain and Kuwait.

The regional crossfire has increased the risk that an interim deal to end fighting in the war could fail, putting the Middle East again at risk of a wider conflict.

The attacks on the ships and resulting strikes took place during the day-long funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 in the first moments of the war at the age of 86. The funeral, which ends on Thursday, was seen as a time of reduced tension – even though mourners repeatedly called for the assassination of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Negotiations to reach a final deal were expected to begin after Khamenei’s burial and focus on the most difficult issues, including fully reopening the strait and abandoning Tehran’s controversial nuclear program. But the new attacks have called that into question.

“The era of intimidation and extortion is over,” Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf wrote on X. “This isn’t going anywhere. We’re not giving in.”

Overnight US strikes target Iran

The U.S. military’s Central Command said U.S. forces launched the strikes “to impose high costs by targeting and attacking commercial vessels crewed by innocent civilians on an international waterway.”

It said it hit Iranian targets, including air defense systems, radars and more than 60 small boats used by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards. These boats played a key role in harassing ships in the strait.

The US military remains “ready to hold Iran accountable when the agreement is not respected or respected”, he added, asserting that this series of attacks had ended.

Iran has acknowledged the strikes, but has made no statement on casualties. Iranian state media reported the sound of explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm and Sirik.

On Wednesday morning, Bahrain, home of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, and Kuwait, home of the U.S. military, issued missile alerts. The Guard released a statement admitting to targeting U.S. military installations in both countries.

“The murderous and terrorist US military openly violated the ceasefire and violated the Islamabad agreement by launching an airstrike on a number of coastal bases and civilian stations on the coasts of Hormozgan and Mahshahr provinces,” he said, without addressing attacks on ships in the strait.

Bahrain sounded its alert a second time later Wednesday morning.

A similar wave of Iranian attacks on ships and US retaliation occurred late last month – which also led to Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait. Wednesday’s strikes also came while Trump was in Türkiye for a summit of the NATO military alliance.

US revokes license to sell Iranian oil

The United States also revoked a license allowing the sale of Iranian oil under the interim deal. This allowed Iran, for the first time in years, to openly sell oil on the international market for US dollars. Iran has long been suspected of selling sanctioned crude oil to China at below-market prices.

The decision came after strikes in the maritime sector. An oil tanker was sailing off the coast of Oman when it was hit and caught fire, the UK’s maritime trade operations center said. Iranian state television said the liquefied natural gas tanker was attacked after ignoring warnings, but did not directly claim responsibility for the attack.

The other two ships suffered some damage, but no one was injured, and both continued on their way through the Strait of Hormuz, the British shipping agency said. Iran has maintained a stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz since the war, disrupting global energy markets as a fifth of all oil and natural gas trade passed through the canal in peacetime. The ships attacked Tuesday all appeared to be taking a route close to the coast of Oman, rather than the one ordered by Tehran.

Tehran has repeatedly said only its approved route through the strait is safe and is suspected of attacking other ships that used the Oman route.

Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, said the Qatari tanker Al Rekayyat had been the target of an “unacceptable attack” on international shipping and global energy security. He said Qatar held Iran “fully legally responsible.”

Iran and the United States agreed under the interim deal to allow ships to pass through without paying fees for 60 days. But Tehran insisted it must control ship routes and then charge passage fees, which would upend decades of practice on the waterway.

The United States and many Gulf Arab states say they will not accept Iran charging for passage through the strait.
