Patterson raises awareness of lupus
PATTERSON, N.J. (PIX11) — Work has been delayed all day for city employee Valida Hall, who quietly battles lupus.
Hall remembers vividly the day he was diagnosed about 10 years ago.
“It was devastating,” Hall said. “You wouldn’t expect to hear that.”
It is an often overlooked autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s own tissues and organs, affecting an estimated 1.5 million Americans. But on Tuesday, Hall’s eyes filled with tears when Patterson City Hall raised its purple flag for the first time to raise awareness about lupus.
“I feel grateful. I feel like I’ve been seen. I feel like I’ve been heard. I feel like people understand. I feel happy,” Hall said. “We are not invisible. This is no longer an invisible disease. That flag proves it.”
Lupus can also affect children. Elizabeth Santa Cruz is one of New Jersey’s strongest lupus advocates thanks to her daughter, who was diagnosed with lupus at just nine years old. Now she is 16 and doing well.
“When the diagnosis began, there was a period when she couldn’t walk for more than 40 minutes. She had to go to physical therapy before and after school,” Santa Cruz said. “Lupus can also affect children, so we want our community to know what the symptoms of lupus are.”
According to the CDC, symptoms of lupus can range from fatigue, joint pain, rashes, and fever. Proponents say it’s important to know the signs and see a doctor.
“We are strong, we are warriors, we are fighting this disease,” Hall said.
