Dr. Stone Discusses Speech Impairment Linked to PSA Screening for Prostate Cancer
Benjamin V. Stone, M.D., Fellow of the Department of Urological Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, discusses the relationship between language barriers and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening rates in American men.
In a retrospective study to be presented at the 2023 American Urological Association Annual Meeting, Professor Stone and colleagues used a medical spending panel study to identify men aged 55 and older who do not speak English as their first language. Patients were stratified based on their English proficiency (very good vs good vs poor vs no English speakers).
Investigators said they collected data on whether the men had ever completed a PSA test, how long it had been since their last PSA test, and other sociodemographic and clinical baseline factors. Stone points out. The main focus was on men who reported never having had a PSA test and how it related to their level of English proficiency, Stone explained.
Men who don’t speak English were found to be significantly less likely to get a PSA test, Stone continued. According to the survey results, he 79.6% of men who speak English very well report having had her PSA test at least once in their lifetime. 58.4% of men who spoke no English had at least one PSA test. This points to a clear gap in access to and knowledge of testing, Stone said.
The study also showed that men who spoke less English were significantly less likely to be tested, continued Stone. The researchers adjusted the parameters for other factors, but English-speaking men were significantly less likely to be screened, Stone concluded.
