Third earthquake of the week observed in western Kentucky

An earthquake — the third this week — was reported in western Kentucky by the USGS on Saturday afternoon. This quake was northwest of Madisonville and seven kilometers north of Nebo.

According to the USGS, it was recorded at 2.5, and it came from 16 kilometers from the Earth’s surface.

Last Monday night, a pair of earthquakes similar to this location were identified and felt. At about 9:45 p.m., the first was recorded at a magnitude of 3.0 in McLean County, near Calhoun, 19 miles southwest of Owensboro. Four minutes and about five miles later, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake was registered in Hopkins County, 24 miles southwest of Owensboro.

Meteorologist Jason Lindsay notes that all of this shifting has come from the Rough Creek Fault System, which serves as an extension and terminus of the new Madrid fault.

In a January 2001 report by Robert McDowell of the USGS, he described western Kentucky as part of the “Illinois Basin,” to include the Pennsylvania coalfield, the Rough Creek and Pennyrile fault systems, the Moorman syncline between those fault systems, and the Illinois-Kentucky region of fluorspar near Paducah and the Ohio River. .

The Rough Creek fault system consists of high-angle normal faults and less common reverse faults, with coalfield strip mining indicating significant downhill, slip, and vertical movement during at least the early Permian periods.
