An earthquake shook Gauteng.

Some Gauteng residents were shaken awake in the early hours of Sunday morning when a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the East Rand.

Videos posted on social media showed continuous shaking, in what one Twitter user described as a “moving train”.

Instrumental and preliminary information recorded by the Earth Science Council indicated that a 4.7-magnitude earthquake occurred on the east Gauteng rand during the pre-dawn hours on Sunday.

The council’s website listed the location of the earthquake as coordinates located in Alberton.

Information on the website states that the earthquake has not yet been confirmed by a seismologist and the time of seismic activity is listed as 02:38 SAT.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded the quake.

Her initial information on the seismic event indicated that it was just under a magnitude 5 earthquake.

The USGS page stated that the quake had been “reviewed”.

Residents in parts of Gauteng were awakened from their sleep, and some people reported their walls shaking.
