“Big” can feel bigger

Salt Lake City – The next major earthquake that struck along Washash Front could cause more damage than initially thought.

After studying the 5.7-magnitude magna earthquake, researchers believe that the so-called “big” can feel larger because it may be miles closer to the Earth’s surface.

“It makes a big difference in terms of the level of ground shake you might feel or experience very close to the epicenter,” said Keith Cooper, director of seismological stations at the University of Utah.

Their findings were recently presented for peer review by geophysical research messages last week.

“We are thrilled about earthquakes like this and we’ve got a lot of new information,” said research scientist Catherine Wedden.

The structure of the Magna error was relatively unknown before March 18, 2020.

After examining thousands of aftershocks, researchers will use the data to update seismic risk models. It can even be used to update building codes in the future.

Weiden said: “We are improving our understanding of error and understanding our risks here in Utah and in the long run, we will all be safer.”
