Canadiens great goaltender Carey Price will take a well-deserved place in the Hockey Hall of Fame
Carey Price had to wait a year, but he can now join his former Canadiens teammate and good friend Shea Weber in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Price was passed over last year in his first year of Hall of Fame eligibility, while Weber was inducted during his first year of eligibility in 2024.
On Monday, the Hall of Fame announced that Price will be part of the Class of 2026, along with former Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, former Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne and former forward Keith Tkachuk, who played for the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Thrashers. Tkachuk is the father of Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, who both now play for the Florida Panthers.
Cindy Curley is the only female player in the class of 2026. She won a silver medal with Team USA at the inaugural IIHF Women’s Hockey Championship in 1990 and served as the team’s captain until 1996. Former NHL executive Brian Burke will be inducted as a builder this year.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held on November 9 in Toronto.
Up to four male players can be inducted into the Hall of Fame each year, and last year Price lost to Zdeno Chara, Duncan Keith, Alexander Mogilny and Joe Thornton. There are 18 members of the Hall of Fame selection committee and a player needs 14 votes for induction.
Mike Gartner, the chairman of the Hall of Fame’s board of directors, and Ron Francis, the chairman of the selection committee, called Price to tell him the news Monday afternoon.
“Thanks guys. I wasn’t prepared for that,” Price told them on the phone. “Thank you so much. I’m incredibly honored. Thank you so much.”
It was a surprise that Price didn’t get the call last year considering the career he had with the Canadiens.
Although he has never won the Stanley Cup, Price is the Canadiens’ all-time leader in wins by a goaltender with 361. In 2014–15, he won the Vézina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender and the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player after posting a 44–16–6 record with a 1.96 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage and nine shutouts.
On the international stage, Price won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics when he posted a 5-0 record with a 0.60 GAA and a .972 save percentage. He also won gold with Team Canada at the 2007 IIHF World Championship and at the 2016 Hockey World Cup.
In 2021, Price carried the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning while posting a 2.28 GAA and .924 save percentage.
“Pricey, at the end of my career he’ll be the only player I played with and say, ‘That was pretty cool,’” said former teammate Brendan Gallagher as he was honored this month as sports personality of the year at the annual Montreal Sports Celebrity Evening. “There are so many stories I could tell about Pricey, but my favorite was before Game 7 in Toronto (during the first round of the 2021 playoffs). We had a pretty experienced team. It felt like the guys were a little nervous. Pricey was as loose as he could be. He just looked around the room and said, ‘Don’t worry, guys, I got this.’ And he did.”
Price made 30 saves as the Canadiens beat the Maple Leafs 3-1 in Toronto in Game 7, after making 41 saves in a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs in Game 6 at the Bell Centre.
A persistent knee injury ended Price’s career after he played just five games the following season.
The native of Anahim Lake, B.C., is one of only five goaltenders in NHL history to win the Vézina Trophy and the Hart Trophy in the same season. He finished his career with a 2.51 GAA, a .917 save percentage and 49 shutouts.

If (the Hall of Fame) happens, that’s great, but I’m very proud of the career I’ve had and the memories I’ve made and the friendships I’ve built over my career – that would be kudos in my career.” the cap and of course I would be very honored.”
