Oakland County Fair pigs test positive for swine flu

Davisburg, Michigan (Fox2) – Several pigs attending the Oakland County Fair have tested positive for the influenza A virus that causes swine flu.

According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Health and Human Services, pigs began showing symptoms on July 14 at a fair held July 7-16 at Springfield Oaks County Park in Davisburg and organized and managed by the Oakland County 4-H Fair Association.

The pigsty was closed to the public that night.

Oakland County Medical Director Dr. Russell Faust said: “Visitors who have visited a piggery and develop respiratory symptoms are encouraged to consult their health care provider and report possible contact with infected pigs.”

No human cases of swine flu have been reported in Michigan this year.

The Department of Health is working with state partners and fair administrators to track and monitor exposed exhibitors and fair staff.

“Doctors are reminding people who are showing symptoms to consider swine flu, even in the warmer months when seasonal flu cases are rare,” Faust said.

In the meantime, the county is notifying members of the public who may have visited the piggery.
