Incidence of Salmonella increases rapidly, cases in 23 states
Already dozens of states have been hit by a rapidly growing Salmonella pandemic that has already affected hundreds of people.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that an additional 87 illnesses were reported and eight new states were affected by outbreaks From Tuesday.. Authorities have not yet identified the origin of the bacteria.
Bacterial outbreaks can usually be traced to food sources, but no particular food, grocery store, or restaurant has yet been linked to an outbreak. Health officials are interviewing and asking people who are sick about the foods they eat.
As of Friday’s update, there are 212 reported cases spread across 23 states. Thirty-one have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported yet.
Cases reported have spread throughout the country, from California to Maine. Oregon and Utah are the most hit states. According to the CDC map..
If you have any symptoms, the CDC recommends that you contact your health care provider, write down what you ate a week before getting sick, and contact your local health department.
Symptoms of Salmonella infections include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, according to the CDC. People who get sick with bacteria usually have symptoms between 6 hours and 6 days after exposure.
Salmonella can spread from the intestine to the bloodstream and even elsewhere in the body, but most people recover without treatment. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days.
On rare occasions, death may result from a Salmonella infection.
People with weakened immunity, children under the age of five, and adults over the age of 65 tend to be severe.
