Nassau County Health Department confirms case of unvaccinated child infected with Long Island measles
NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — The confirmed measles case on Long Island is the first in New York state outside of New York City this year.
Nassau County and the New York State Department of Health are investigating a laboratory-confirmed measles case in an unvaccinated child.
In the meantime, health officials are reminding people to make sure they have up-to-date information about vaccinations.
Three measles cases have been reported in New York state, two of which occurred in New York City.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus that is spread through direct contact with nasal and throat secretions, such as when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The disease can also be transmitted by touching infected surfaces.

According to the World Health Organization, vaccination programs have significantly reduced measles cases in the United States, but globally measles remains one of the leading causes of death among young children.
For 7 to 14 days and up to 21 days after infection, measles symptoms may include:
– high fever
– cough
– snot
– Red and watery eyes
The rash appears 3 to 5 days after symptoms begin.
The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the hairline of the face and spreads downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots.
The spots may join together as they spread from the head to the rest of the body.
When the rash appears, the fever may rise to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
People with measles can spread the disease to others as early as 4 days before the rash appears and as late as 4 days after the rash appears.
