Local residents in the Italian towns of Pordenone, Trieste and Udine suspect that the area was hit by an earthquake on Wednesday. Many social media users posted about the vibration on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter. According to the Android alert, the area experienced a 4.0 magnitude earthquake.

The quake measured 4.7 magnitude, according to the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS). The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 5.0 and was at a shallow depth of only 10 kilometers. The earthquake's impact was felt more intensely near the epicenter because of its shallow depth, compared to a deeper earthquake of the same strength, according to the Volcano Discovery website.

The exact size, epicenter, and depth may be revised as seismologists gather more information about the earthquake.

“Based on preliminary seismic data, it is likely that many people around the epicenter felt the quake,” the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said while first reporting the quake two minutes after it struck.

“It wasn't supposed to cause serious damage, other than things falling off shelves, broken windows, etc.,” she said.

Italy has witnessed several earthquakes recently. On March 24, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred 249 km from Bari. On the same day, a 2.0 magnitude earthquake was reported 289 km east of Crotone. A magnitude 2.2 earthquake occurred 41 km north of Messina on March 23.
