7 new small earthquakes in New Jersey, bringing the total number of aftershocks to 70

Seven more small earthquakes were reported in central New Jersey between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, increasing the already high aftershock total from the main April 5 quake to 70.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes around the world, reported aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 0.9 to 1.4 in the past 14 hours — most centered in Hunterdon County, and one centered in Somerset County.

It is not clear whether anyone felt any of the new aftershocks.

The most recent New Jersey earthquakes reported by the USGS were:

Force 1.0 – 3.1 miles southeast of Califon at 11:01 p.m. Sunday Force 1.1 – 3.7 miles east-southeast of Califon at 1:02 a.m. Monday Force 1.3 – 4.3 miles east-southeast of Califon at 1:17 a.m. Monday Force 0.9 – 3.7 miles east – Southeast of Califon at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Magnitude 1.4 – 4.3 miles west of Gladstone at 6:23 a.m. Monday, Magnitude 1.2 – 3.7 miles east-southeast of Califon at 6:50 a.m. Monday, Magnitude 1.0 – 5.0 miles east-southeast of Califon at 9: 59 am on Monday

Aftershocks are not unexpected, as experts say they can last for weeks or even months after the initial quake. To date, the strongest aftershock was a magnitude 3.8 — originally reported as 4.0 but later reclassified — and occurred on April 5 about 7 1/2 hours after the initial magnitude 4.8 quake.

The major quake was felt by more than 42 million people across the East Coast, according to estimates. Its center was near the town of Redington in Hunterdon County.

Although no injuries were reported, video footage showed some homes and businesses with pictures falling from the walls and glass in cabinets shaking. Minor structural damage in Newark forced residents to evacuate three buildings, and portions of the brick facade of a historic mill in Readington collapsed.
