All four events occurred in a one-week period near the south edge of Lake Lanier

SUGAR HILL, Ga. — Another earthquake shook northern Gwinnett County around the south end of Lake Lanier early Thursday morning.

A 2.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 3:17 a.m., about 2.5 miles north of Buford. The depth was about 5.5 miles below the Earth's surface, slightly deeper than the previous three earthquakes.

According to the USGS's tremor map (pictured below), very few people reported feeling shaking. Two of the previous three earthquakes were felt more widely around the south side of Lake Lanier.

Research scientists from the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech University and Georgia State University will begin installing a series of underground seismic nodes on Thursday and placing several seismic sensors above ground. They hope to collect more data in case any more earthquakes occur and find out what caused the latest swarm.

R. says Scott Harris, an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Georgia, said there are two main aspects of the recent seismic activity that interest him.

“They were all about the same magnitude, and three out of the four quakes were in relatively the same place. But what really catches my attention is the time scale of when these quakes occurred. We see these quakes hitting the state almost every day. Six to seven years,” Harris added. “Mostly near Lake Sinclair, but not within days of each other. “We see six to seven weeks between seismic events, and after a few series events, nothing for years. But we haven't seen this around Lake Lanier. So why now?” Lake Lanier has been around for a long time, and water levels have risen with early spring rains, but this has happened before, and has never caused this kind of seismic activity.

In earthquake swarms, sometimes stress from one quake can build up stress elsewhere, which can later help cause another, Harris said.

According to the USGS, earthquake swarms “can experience several earthquakes of similar magnitude to the largest earthquake in the sequence. Sometimes, sequences do not decay over time but remain constant or even increase in their rates of activity over periods of days or weeks. Or even “Most commonly, sequences that do not fit the main aftershock pattern are typically considered swarms.”

The seismic nodes will be buried underground, so they can pick up the smallest seismic activities much better than a seismometer located above ground inside a seismic sensor. The group of research scientists plans to install six of these underground nodes.
