Google Messages preparing support for new E2EE groups

summary

Google's Messages app now includes code that references Messaging Layer Security (MLS). These MLS flags are an early sign of support for encrypted group messaging solutions. Google's efforts could drive adoption of MLS, just as they did with RCS.

Getting everyone's favorite messaging services to play nicely with each other may be the holy grail of modern communication. But despite progress in breaking away from a world of colored bubbles, significant challenges remain. Last year, Google announced support for Messaging Layer Security (MLS), a new standard that promises to keep end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messages safe across apps and platforms, whether in one-to-one or group chats. We're finally starting to see the fruits of that effort as we start to see references to MLS in Google Messages apps.

APK teardowns help us predict future features that may be introduced to the service based on code in progress, although predicted features may not make it into a general release.

The big problem that MLS, developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is trying to solve is E2EE group messaging. Google has already extended its Rich Communication Services (RCS) to support E2EE for groups. It remains to be seen how MLS will integrate with messaging, but we can expect it to lead to more robust and secure communications that not only cross platforms but also support all of your favorite apps.

Digging into recent Google Messages builds, we found two flags that explicitly reference MLS.

Other strings present within the app suggest that they're on the way to making MLS the default security layer for messaging. This could be significant, as adoption will drive the protocol's success, so making it opt-in certainly won't help. Given the enthusiasm Google has shown for MLS thus far, becoming an early advocate with Messages could be a very intentional way of showing that they're on the side of open messaging. It's worth highlighting for companies in contentious markets like the EU, where regulators are eager to push services toward interoperability (whether they like it or not).

Following the arrival of RCS support on iOS, we've been waiting to see what the next phase of cross-platform messaging will be. It may still be too early to say whether MLS will live up to its potential, but as companies like Google have started to build frameworks for MLS into their apps, as we can see here, we're getting closer to finding the answer.
