One-year-old in Tri-State confirmed to have measles

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) – Three states have reported new confirmed cases of measles.
A 1-year-old child from Butler County was infected while traveling abroad. News release from the county health department.
Health officials said the one-year-old was flown back to the United States through a Chicago-area airport and then driven to Ohio.
“This is a reportable Class A illness and we don't typically see these cases in the United States anymore,” said Brittany Gabbard, director of nursing for the Butler County Health Department.
The health department says it was notified about the measles case by Tri-State Pediatrics Hospital.
County health officials said they would not release any additional information about the toddler.
The health department was closed on July 4th due to the federal holiday, but staff worked “to notify close contacts of the case status,” according to the release.
If you do not receive a call from the health center, you will be told that it is safe to assume that you are not infected with measles.
“Public health officials recommend that everyone age 1 and older who has not yet been vaccinated get the measles vaccine to protect themselves and those around them. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes,” the news release said.
“The main symptoms are a high fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher accompanied by a cough. You may also have a runny nose. You may have red eyes and inflammation around the nose and mouth. This is the typical measles rash, which usually starts on the head and moves down,” Gabbard said.
The Department of Health strongly recommends getting the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
“Anyone born after 1957 who has not been vaccinated is at extremely high risk for contracting measles,” Gabbard said.
Gabbard has said the vaccine is the best prevention against the disease.
It is a two-dose vaccine: the first dose is usually given between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second between 4 and 6 months of age.
“This is a required vaccination for all schools, so most people are up to date on vaccinations,” Gabbard said.
Butler County health officials urge residents to contact their local health care provider if they are unsure of their vaccination status or their own status, if they have not received the measles vaccination or if they think they may be experiencing measles symptoms.
