Court reserves verdict on Imran Khan's interim bail in three May 9 cases

LAHORE:

An anti-terrorism court has reserved its decision on interim bail pleas of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan related to the May 9 incidents, including the Jinnah House case and two other cases.

During Saturday's hearing, Imran's lawyer Salman Safdar argued that the PTI founder was being targeted for political reasons.

“In my entire career, I have never seen so many cases against a single individual. Those who were actually inciting violence against institutions on the premises have not been arrested,” Safdar said.

“How could a complaint be filed against him when he was in custody at the time of the crime?” asked the PTI leader's lawyer.

The government lawyer countered by saying that according to a Special Branch report, the former prime minister had ordered his supporters to attack civilian and military installations if he was arrested.

“The order to attack military installations across Pakistan led to the events that occurred,” the prosecutor said.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court reserved judgment on Khan's requests for interim release.

Earlier this week, on July 3, a district and sessions court in Islamabad acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and all other accused in a case registered at Aabpara police station in Islamabad.

Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mahmood announced the reserved verdict, exonerating Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rasheed, Shehryar Afridi, Faisal Javed, Raja Khurram Nawaz, Ali Nawaz Awan, Asad Qaiser and others of all charges.

The acquittal came after the defence, represented by lawyer Sardar Masroof and Ansar Kiani, presented their arguments on behalf of the accused Imran Khan, Sheikh Rasheed and others.

On July 1, at least 140 PTI workers were acquitted in a case related to holding a rally ahead of the general elections.

The court noted that the accused were not arrested on the spot and no incriminating material was found on them. Moreover, no complaints were filed by local residents regarding the road blockades.
