In an interview on Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk spoke about his tense relationship with former Google CEO Larry Page and their contrasting views on artificial intelligence.

What happened: Musk had this conversation with Dr. Jordan B. Peterson at Tesla's Gigafactory in Texas. The tech billionaire was discussing the origins of OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, a startup he co-founded in 2015 and left in 2018.

“I was very close with Larry Page, who was one of my best friends,” he said, adding that for a long time he was homeless in the Bay Area and stayed with friends, including Page.

Musk said he had these discussions with Page at the time, and was troubled by Page's lack of consideration for AI safety.

The tech mogul then recounted the time Page called him a speciesist, to which Musk replied that Page was right, and added that, if I'm not mistaken, Page's idea was that eventually we'll all upload our minds into computers and everyone will be robots.

Dr Peterson echoed Musk's concerns, saying such a future would be tantamount to the death of humanity.

Why it matters: Last November, Musk expressed his desire to repair his strained relationship with Page during an appearance on Lex Friedman's podcast.

“I'd love to be friends with Larry again. I haven't seen him in years. We've been friends for a very long time,” Musk said at the time.

The rift between Musk and Page reportedly began over their differing views on OpenAI, with tensions rising in 2014 when the Tesla CEO advised DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis not to go ahead with a deal with Google, where Page was CEO at the time.
