Where did the earthquake hit?

The U.S. Geological Survey, known as USGS, is the government agency that, among other things, tracks earthquakes and their magnitudes around the world. On Sunday, July 28, at 2:50 p.m., the USGS recorded a magnitude 2.8 earthquake in Maine near West Gardiner with the epicenter at these coordinates: 44.236°N 69.862°W. That’s roughly here on the map, south of Augusta and northeast of West Gardiner.

These coordinates are not 100% accurate as the USGS reports some uncertainty in their data at this time and the actual epicenter of the earthquake could be anywhere within a radius of about 4.5 miles from where this pin is located on the map above.

How threatening is this earthquake?

Nothing much at all. There were reports of some people feeling the quake, but the USGS says that a magnitude 2 to 3 quake is felt only by a small number of people at rest, especially on the upper floors of buildings. Hanging objects might swing delicately, but that’s about it.
