Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor: Collaboration in Educational Excellence and Research Innovation
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is Pakistan’s apex body responsible for leading and managing higher education, ensuring global standards and promoting world-class research and innovation.
Over the past two years, HEC has organized several visits for separate delegations of senior Bangladeshi academics, including chairmen of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission and vice-chancellors of various universities.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen ties between higher education leaders from the two countries and create opportunities to improve university education, foster research collaboration, share innovation and facilitate technology transfer.
This is part of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor initiative of the Government of Pakistan. Under the scheme, at least 500 Bangladeshi students will receive the Allama Iqbal Scholarship free of charge to study medicine, engineering, emerging technologies and other disciplines at leading Pakistani universities.
During our visit, we met many of the 74 students who joined Pakistani universities last year, with the second batch already underway.
Eye-opening experience
For the visiting Bangladeshi delegation, the tour provided an invaluable opportunity to understand the quality of higher education, research and innovation in Pakistan.
Senior Pakistani academics have always expressed keen interest in collaboration with Bangladeshi universities, especially in areas such as engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. They were keen to support capacity building and technology transfer that could significantly benefit Bangladesh.
The delegation received a warm welcome at the National Assembly of Pakistan from the Speaker of Parliament, MP Sarder Ayaz Sadiq, and held meetings with the Federal Minister and Minister of State for Education, HEC President Prof. Niaz A. Akhtar, senior officials of HEC and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. These discussions were cordial, informative and very productive.
Innovation and excellence in research
Beyond observing physical infrastructure, the delegation engaged in detailed discussions on program design, teaching facilities, student support systems, research laboratories, technological innovation, doctoral programs, journal publications, citation performance, global rankings and international collaborations.
We were particularly impressed by the state-of-the-art facilities and free health services provided by the medical universities. A notable innovation was the online examination system conducted simultaneously for thousands of medical students across multiple locations, with results published within minutes of the examination completion.
NED University of Engineering and Technology showcased advanced cybersecurity laboratories, medical technology innovations and energy measurement systems. The globally recognized ICCBS, an OIC Center of Excellence, remains a center of scientific achievements associated with renowned academics such as Atta-ur-Rahman, the founder of HEC in 2006.
Equally impressive has been the National University of Technology’s hands-on training model, which serves as a classic example of work-integrated learning designed to produce industry-ready graduates.
A remarkable cancer hospital
Our visit to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center was particularly moving. The institution is a testament to the extraordinary vision of the legendary cricketer turned politician and former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan.
Millions of cancer patients are treated there, most of them free of charge, thanks to voluntary donations. Members of the Bangladeshi delegation made a symbolic donation as a sign of solidarity.
Healthy competition between universities
Although we were unable to visit several other leading universities, including in Lahore, it became clear that Pakistan’s higher education sector benefits from provincial and federal ranking systems in addition to global rankings. This has created real competition between universities to improve the quality of teaching and research performance.
The delegation was deeply touched by the hospitality offered by every Pakistani institution and individual we met. The exceptional support provided by the Director of HEC, Mr. Jehanzeb Khan, and his team deserves special recognition.
Presentation of research works
On behalf of the Bangladeshi delegation, I presented two of my books published by Springer Nature to eminent Pakistani researchers: (1) “Methods of Health Meta-Analysis and Experimental Studies” to Prof. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director, OIC Center of Excellence at ICCBS, Karachi.
The book has recorded more than 45,000 accesses and its second edition will soon be published. (2) “Statistical Methods and Models for Health and Clinical Studies” to Professor Ali Shah, Advisor to the Higher Education Commission. The book has also been translated into Greek.
The untapped educational collaboration between Bangladesh and Pakistan has the potential to become a powerful catalyst for academic excellence, research innovation and technological advancement.
The knowledge, experience and goodwill shared during this visit demonstrate that universities in both countries can benefit enormously from deeper engagement, joint research initiatives, faculty exchanges and student mobility.
Strengthening these links will not only enrich higher education systems, but also contribute to broader regional cooperation and development.
