Japanese authorities have urged citizens in large areas of the country to take precautions against a possible major earthquake.

Japanese authorities have issued a special warning for the first time, after a powerful earthquake struck the island of Kyushu on Thursday.

This warning is part of the precautionary measures taken against the possibility of a major earthquake. This measure is known as the Additional Information Protocol for the Nankai Trough Earthquake.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says there is a relatively high chance of a major earthquake occurring in the Nankai Trough area. If a large-scale earthquake occurs in the future, strong tremors and a large tsunami are expected. Although the probability is now higher than usual, the agency notes that this does not mean that something will definitely happen within a certain time frame.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Thursday, and tremors continued in the area into Friday. Experts say seismic activity remains high.

Experts believe the Nankai Trough earthquake could occur along the plate boundary between Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture and the Hyogandada Sea off Kyushu. They believe there is a 70 to 80 percent chance that the quake will strike within the next three decades and that its magnitude will be between 8 and 9.

According to recent government estimates, in a worst-case scenario, it could kill more than 230,000 people and destroy about two million buildings.
