Tsunami warning: 33-foot waves from massive quake likely to kill 3.2 million, cause Rs 125 crore damage
There is a high risk of a massive earthquake along a fault line near Japan's east coast, the China Earthquake Society said in a recent statement. The quake could have serious consequences for local residents and the global economy.
The warning comes after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in the Nankai Trough affected Japan's Kyushu island.
A researcher from the China Earthquake Administration has warned that a fault in a certain area could trigger a major earthquake, possibly exceeding 8.5 magnitude or even reaching 9.1 magnitude.
Such an event could generate a tsunami greater than 33 feet high, destroying 23.8 million buildings, potentially killing 3.2 million people and displacing 95 million.
“Cities near the Nankai Basin, especially in the Chugoku and Kansai clusters, are major economic centers, accounting for 70 percent of Japan's manufacturing,” Gao Mingtan was quoted as saying by the South China Morning Post.
“An earthquake in this area would not only affect Japan’s manufacturing sector, but also the global supply chain, with potential economic losses of up to 220 trillion yen (125 trillion rupees), twice Japan’s annual budget,” Mangatan added.
On August 8, an earthquake struck the island of Kyushu, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to warn of a major quake in the coming week. Although the quake did not cause major damage, it did cancel travel plans, including a visit to Central Asia by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Japan's Cabinet Office said that if no major earthquakes occur, the warning will be withdrawn by noon on Aug. 15.
Tsunami affects 100 towns
The Japan Earthquake Research Committee says a strong earthquake could affect several towns in several areas. A large tsunami could affect more than 100 towns.
Kyushu is known for its semiconductor industry, home to more than 200 manufacturers and producing about half of Japan's semiconductors, according to Shanghai-based newspaper The Paper.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
