Greater Christchurch Metro breaks visitor record after quake

“Our network is going from strength to strength, and we are excited to see our patronage numbers continue to rise,” said Metro spokesman Thomas McNaughton.

The data reveals that 138,000 customers used Metro services using their MetroCard during the financial year, with an estimated 28 per cent of Greater Christchurch residents using the service in the past 12 months.

“This jump in sponsorship is encouraging, supported by the $2 flat rate trial,” said Canterbury Councillor for the Environment Joe Davies.

The $2 flat-fare trial, which is scheduled to run until June 2025, is cited as a significant factor in the recent increase in ridership.

“We want to thank our customers for choosing public transit – they are the reason we are able to achieve these milestones, which is positive for our environment and our community,” said McNaughton.
