Caritas Morocco provided assistance to more than 40,000 people during the first year of the earthquake – Morocco

The joint work of the three main Caritas organizations in the region has made it possible to provide humanitarian assistance and begin rebuilding the livelihoods of the most remote populations. Caritas Spain has so far mobilized 480,000 euros in response to two emergency appeals launched by Caritas Morocco, in coordination with the International Federation of Caritas Internationalis.

Caritas – September 5, 2024. The year following the devastating earthquake that struck the Moroccan Atlas region on September 8, 2023 was marked by an unprecedented mobilization of the three main Caritas organizations in the country: Caritas Morocco, the Caritas Rabat Diocese and the Caritas Marrakech Diocese. Their joint action has helped more than 40,000 people during this period and laid the foundations for starting to rebuild the livelihoods of the most affected populations in remote areas.

Projects implemented so far in the area have prioritized the distribution of essential supplies such as food kits, blankets, hygiene products, access to water and sanitation facilities, and temporary and flexible shelter for displaced families.

During this period, it was able to provide medical, psychosocial and social support to some 4,500 people, ensure access to water for 1,500 people and facilitate the education of more than 230 children, among other activities. The programmes were developed mainly in rural communities in the High Atlas regions (Al Haouz, Ouarzazate and Taroudant) located about 200 kilometres south of the tourist city of Marrakech.

“One of the main elements of our intervention was to respond to the areas furthest from urban centres, where few organisations could reach and where we were in fact the only organisations,” says Jesuit Father Alvar Sanchez, Secretary General of Caritas Morocco, in his assessment of the activities, on the first anniversary of the worst earthquake recorded in the region since 1900.

Following the powerful earthquake (6.8 on the Richter scale) that struck large parts of the Maghreb, Caritas Spain has activated an emergency campaign to mobilize citizens' solidarity and cooperation in the response.

Thanks to this fundraising campaign, 480,000 euros have been allocated in recent months in response to two emergency appeals launched by Caritas Morocco in coordination with Caritas Internationalis. It has also provided technical support in strengthening Caritas Morocco's institutions and in assessing needs with a view to formulating first humanitarian response programmes. “Thanks to this collaboration, we were able to have a good overview of the situation at a time when reality was very volatile,” says Sanchez.

After a year of intense work, the Secretary General of Caritas Morocco highlighted the enormous human capital that this natural disaster has brought to light. “This scale demonstrates not only the resilience of the Moroccan Atlas communities, but also the fraternal collaboration between the Caritas sisters, without whose generosity all these works would not have seen the light of day. We are very grateful.

Our biggest challenge now is to give affected people the opportunity to regain control of their lives. “As we continue our emergency humanitarian response, we are beginning to lay the foundation for people to restore their livelihoods,” he says. “To this end, we are developing initiatives to support the livelihoods of families, especially women, to help them generate income and regain some independence.”

Caritas Spain has been collaborating with Caritas in Morocco since the 1990s. In recent years, particularly in human mobility projects. The programs implemented in recent years aim to welcome migrants in vulnerable situations and provide them with assistance and support so that they can exercise their fundamental rights in Morocco.
