A man who had recently returned from abroad has been reported in Malappuram district of Kerala, displaying symptoms of monkeypox and suspected monkeypox infection.
District health officials said the patient arrived in Kerala a few days ago and was initially admitted to a private hospital after falling ill.
“From there he was admitted to Manjeri Medical College. As monkeypox is suspected, his samples have been sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing. The results are awaited,” the official said.
A fresh case of monkeypox (Mpox) was reported in the Indian capital last week after a 26-year-old man from Hisar, Haryana, tested positive for the virus and was admitted to the government-run LNJP Hospital in Delhi.
The Indian Ministry of Health called the case an isolated case, like the 30 cases reported in India since July 2022, and stressed that it is not part of the current public health emergency regarding MPOX lineage 1 reported by the WHO.
A 26-year-old man from Hisar was announced to have tested positive for the West African lineage 2 MPOX virus.
Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared MPOX a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for the second time due to its widespread outbreak in many parts of Africa.
Mpox infections are generally self-limited and last for 2 to 4 weeks. Patients usually recover with supportive care and treatment. It is transmitted by prolonged close contact with an infected patient.

A boy from Malappuram, who was being treated for Nipah virus infection, died on July 21. This was the first confirmed case of Nipah virus infection in the state this year.
Nipah virus outbreaks have been reported in Kozhikode district in 2018, 2021 and 2023, and in Ernakulam district in 2019.
Presence of Nipah virus antibodies was detected in bats from Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram and Ernakulam districts.
