New COVID-19 vaccines available at the hub
COVID-19 vaccines for 2024-25 are now available. University of Pittsburgh Vaccination and Health Connectivity Hub.
“The recent summer surge in COVID-19 cases has raised concerns about how to best prepare for the upcoming fall and winter seasons,” said Joe Suyama, medical director of the hub and professor of emergency medicine and vice chair for career development at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
“This year's COVID-19 vaccines have been updated to match the COVID-19 variants currently circulating, so getting your COVID-19 updates along with your flu shot is the best way to reduce your chances of becoming severely ill or being hospitalized with either condition, especially if you are at higher risk for a bad outcome.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the protective effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines decreases over time, so it is important to get a new vaccine even if you have been vaccinated before.
be CDC statement announcing new vaccineIn 2023, more than 916,300 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 and more than 75,500 people died from COVID-19. It is estimated that more than 44,900 people will die from influenza complications in the 2023-24 influenza season.
The hub is located at Nordenberg Hall, 4041 Fifth Ave., and will have the Moderna vaccine available for patients ages 3 and older, and the Pfizer vaccine available for patients ages 5 and older. As of Dec. 1, the hub will only be able to vaccinate patients ages 5 and older. Please note that all COVID-19 vaccines are subject to supply chain availability.
The Hub will also be hosting its annual flu vaccination clinic as part of the Safety Fair on September 27th from 10am-2pm at the William Pitt Union, October 8th from 9am-3pm at the Petersen Events Centre and October 9th from 8am-2pm. The Hub will be closed on these dates.
