A 6.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Vava'u

The Tonga Meteorological Service reported shortly after the quake that the 6.8 magnitude earthquake felt by Neiafu residents at 9:05 a.m. today, October 2, 2024, does not pose any tsunami threat.

Millie Tupou, a girl from Otoli in Vavau, said her family was afraid: “It was a very big earthquake.”

“It was about 9:08 a.m., I was having morning tea when my sister ran outside, calling us to get out of the house because the earthquake was getting stronger,” she told Matangi Tonga today.

Tonga Meteorology recorded the earthquake as 189 kilometers southeast of Neafu, Vava'u, and occurred according to these criteria:

“Based on the preliminary earthquake information above, the tsunami wave is unlikely to impact Tonga,” Tonga Meteorology advised.

Meanwhile, Tonga Cable's acting CEO, Susavati Kolo, told Matangi Tonga that the quake did not affect the local submarine fiber optic communications cable, which was recently repaired following damage caused by earthquakes in June and August.

“The cable that was affected by the earthquake that occurred on August 26 was repaired in the first week of September. So far there is no problem with the cable after today’s earthquake,” he told Matangi Tonga.
