Gandapur criticizes KP govt’s performance in leaked audio – Pakistan

PESHAWAR: In a leaked audio message, former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has leveled scathing criticism on the performance of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the recent legislation aimed at increasing the privileges of provincial legislators.

The audio was released on social media on Wednesday evening, amid outcry over the enactment of a new law aimed at extending the immunities and privileges of MPAs.

KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had on Wednesday ordered a review of the controversial legislation after it attracted widespread criticism.

In the over six-minute audio, which was apparently first shared on the ruling PTI’s WhatsApp group, Mr Gandapur said the names of lawmakers who had demanded an increase in their benefits should be made public.

“Those who demand weapons permits, blue passports and other benefits should be known to the public,” he said.

The former chief minister also pointed out that during the budget session of the KP Assembly, he took cognizance of the proposal to increase salaries of MPAs.

“I told them not to increase the salaries of MPs because it would attract strong criticism from the party,” he said.

Mr Gandapur said he knew lawmakers’ salaries were “insignificant” and as chief minister he took up the issue with party founder Imran Khan but was advised against granting such an increase.

He said he was highlighting the issue in party groups but would then speak about it publicly.

“We cannot sacrifice our party, our leader and our ideology for small gains. I am no longer part of it,” he said.

The former chief minister also highlighted the issue of drone attacks, military operations and issues related to development projects.

He said the province was reporting more and more drone attacks, but the provincial government was unable to control them.

“If we remain silent about drone strikes, that does not mean they are not happening,” he said.

Mr Gandapur said drone attacks were causing loss of lives and hence the provincial government could not escape responsibility.

He said military operations were underway in the province and two or three more were planned.

“These operations are being carried out with funding from the KP government, which means it should provide assistance to those displaced due to military actions,” he said.

The former chief minister said party MPs and ministers sometimes had to protest against the “poor quality” of development projects in the province. He wonders who is responsible for this problem.

Mr. Gandapur said transfers and postings of government officials have also drawn protests from employees of the same ministry.

He also questioned the diversion of development funds from a project with obligations to those with none and ordered advance payments to contractors.
