A Rochester woman raises money for Venezuelan earthquake victims in Caracas 16 days after the disaster

HIGHLAND PARK, N.Y. — Rescue workers in Venezuela are still sifting through rubble 16 days after back-to-back earthquakes.

News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with a local Venezuelan woman who is collecting donations to send home. Natalie Raven and her parents live in Highland Park and are saddened by what happened in their former home in Caracas.

Raven began organizing fundraising efforts just two days after the earthquake.

“There’s a lot of people who don’t have anything, and maybe I could try to raise some kind of money. I mean I felt like I could have done a lot more,” Raven said.

Two major earthquakes struck the northern coast of Venezuela on June 24. The damage greatly affected the capital, Caracas, where Ravin is from.

It took hours to hear back from her brother Juan, who is still there. Raven said she felt frustrated being thousands of miles away.

“I think that’s why I started the GoFundMe project because I felt so helpless and I wanted to help in any way I could. And I knew I couldn’t go in there and help pick up the rubble with all the other people,” Raven said.

Two days after the earthquake, Raven began collecting donations. Her brother Juan and his wife, Christel, use it to buy and distribute supplies.

“There’s a woman that went on video that said she didn’t have a place to sleep because she lost everything, and it was her and her newborn baby. So we were able to get her tent, so she could have a somewhat respectable place to stay,” Raven said.

Erin caught up with Krystle on Zoom later in the day. Christel told Irene more about the work they are doing on the ground there and the emotional turmoil the earthquake left everyone with.

With airports in Caracas still closed, Raven said her parents hope to visit once they reopen. They had tickets to go on the Monday after the earthquake.
