Imran warns of 'campaign of judicial arrests' if Lahore Jalsa blocked – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Thursday threatened the government with a campaign of jail arrests (bharo tehreek) if his party was not allowed to hold its jalsa in Lahore on September 21.

Speaking to reporters after the accountability trial in the $190 million corruption case at Adiala Jail, Mr Khan said he had been in jail for 15 months and could stay longer.

He described the jalsa scheduled for September 21 as a matter of life and death for the PTI, saying the Constitution guaranteed the right to assembly and if this right was denied, PTI supporters would fill the jails.

He said the government was playing a disruptive role in the Supreme Court by hastily amending the Constitution and it amounted to usurpation of the right to liberty that was enslaving people.

Responding to a question about his support for the proposed Federal Constitutional Court, Mr Khan said amendments were being drafted to restrict the wings of the judiciary.

He claimed that the government wants to extend the tenure of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, adding that even school children know the objectives behind these amendments. The former prime minister said that he knew that the government would introduce these amendments as it was afraid of the popularity of the PTI.

Cross-examination

Earlier, Mr Khan's lawyer concluded cross-examination of the last prosecution witness in the case.

Lawyer Zaheer Abbas questioned the witness, an investigator from the National Accountability Bureau. However, Bushra Bibi's lawyer Usman Riaz Gill was not available to cross-examine the witness.

Mr Khan's lawyer requested the court to adjourn the hearing till September 26. Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana noted that the defence lawyer had not been able to complete the cross-examination in the last 21 hearings while the investigating officer had appeared on each date and rejected the lawyer's request. The case will be resumed on Friday (today).

Meanwhile, IHC Judge Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb reminded the special judge, central, to decide the bail applications of Mr Khan and his wives within five days in accordance with the national judicial policy.
