Turkish official defends President Erdogan's comparison of Israeli policies to Nazi Germany
ANKARA
Türkiye's communications director responded on Tuesday to criticism from the Austrian Foreign Ministry over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comparison of Israeli policies to those of Nazi Germany.
In a statement, Fahrettin Altun said Erdogan's remarks at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York were “not just an analogy” but rather an “effort to help those who support this genocide look in the mirror.”
The statement accuses those disturbed by the comments of being complicit in “Israeli genocide ongoing against Palestinians.”
Erdogan on Tuesday urged the international community to stop Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as it did generations ago with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
“Just as Hitler was stopped by the alliance of humanity 70 years ago, Netanyahu and his murderous network must be stopped by the alliance of humanity,” Erdogan said in his speech to the General Assembly.
Moreover, Altun responded by saying that only those “who feel guilty and ashamed of their own history would be disturbed” by Erdogan's words.
“President Erdogan used this comparison to make his point understandable to a wide audience and to draw attention to one of the worst episodes of ethnic cleansing and genocide of our time,” he added.
Defending Erdogan's position, the statement insisted that Turkey has “always been on the right side of history” in supporting those fleeing genocide and pledged to “continue to tell the truth and fight for justice” regarding the Palestinian cause.
The response also argued that criticizing Erdogan's remarks amounted to “Western complicity” in Israel's actions.
“Comparisons with the darkest chapter of our history are more than frightening. We reject any polemics such as those used by the Turkish president. Adding fuel to the fire in such an alarming phase is completely irresponsible. Everyone should try to defuse the situation, in words and deeds,” the Austrian Foreign Ministry said on X.
