A 3.2 magnitude earthquake strikes the Baraba area in northern New South Wales

A strong earthquake shook the residents of a small town in the state of New South Wales, the latest in a “swarm” of tremors that the state witnessed.

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake occurred near Baraba, 334 kilometers west of Coffs Harbour, just after 3am on Tuesday.

The Australian Earth Sciences Authority reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, and was felt only by a small number of people.

It comes a week after another 3.2-magnitude earthquake shook residents near Dalton, New South Wales – and this quake was also followed by “dozens of smaller earthquakes”, the Earthquake Research Center said.

Adam Pascual, a seismologist and senior researcher at the Center for Earthquake Research, said he felt the Dalton earthquake from inside a dam about 150 kilometers from the epicenter.

“It seems like a long way to go until we notice force 3.2, but we are on an ancient solid crust here in Australia that allows energy waves to travel a good distance,” Pascual said.

He described the subsequent set of recurring earthquake events as common in the region.

“Earthquake swarms appear almost every year in the Dalton-Gunning-Olong region of New South Wales, with records dating back to 1888,” he said.

An average of 100 magnitude 3 earthquakes are recorded in Australia each year, according to the Australian Geosciences Authority.
