Vanuatu is exposed to a new earthquake that disrupts the resumption of flights – DW – 12/22/2024

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on Sunday morning, hours before the suspension of commercial flights to the island nation was to be lifted.

While the early morning quake on Sunday shook buildings, it does not appear to have caused as much damage as the deadly 7.3-magnitude quake that struck Tuesday.

The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred at an estimated depth of 40 kilometers (about 25 miles), and its epicenter was about 30 kilometers west of the capital, Port Vila. No tsunami warnings were issued.

Earlier on Saturday, it was announced that commercial flights would resume on Sunday to restart the island's vital tourism industry and try to allow stranded travelers the chance to return home in time for Christmas.

The South Pacific country declared a seven-day state of emergency and a night-time curfew in the wake of the first quake, which is still in place.

King Charles offers words of condolence after the fatal blow

Earlier on Saturday evening, before news of the second earthquake emerged, King Charles of the United Kingdom wrote of his sadness at the loss of 12 lives as a result of Tuesday's earthquake.

“My wife and I felt deep sadness when we learned of the magnitude of the earthquake… the loss of life and property caused by this devastating natural disaster,” he said.

“I recognize, from my visit to Vanuatu and Port Vila in 2018, the extraordinary spirit of Vanuatu, which has been frequently called upon in recent years with recurring cyclones and now with this terrible earthquake.”

Relief efforts remain a challenge

Tuesday's earthquake struck Ifaty Island, the country's most populous island, which also collapsed concrete buildings and caused landslides in and around the capital, Port Vila.

Disaster management officials in Vanuatu said that 210 casualties were recorded and 1,698 people were temporarily displaced.

With mobile phone networks not yet restored, communication abroad has been a challenge and has complicated relief efforts.

In addition to the communications disruption, the first earthquake that occurred on Tuesday damaged water supplies and halted operations at the capital's main shipping port.

Vanuatu is a country located in the South Pacific Ocean consisting of about 80 islands, with a population of about 335,000 people, and located about 1,750 kilometers east of Australia.
